Ultrasound is how we find free blood or fluid in the belly after a fall or a car, a bladder that is blocked, a uterus full of infection, a twisted stomach, a mass that is bleeding, or a heart surrounded by fluid. It is fast, it is painless, it needs no anesthesia for most pets, and it answers questions an X-ray cannot.
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. A probe with gel is moved over your pet’s skin and the echoes build a live picture of the organs underneath. Where an X-ray shows shape and density, ultrasound shows texture, movement and fluid — which is why the two tests are often run together.
A patch of fur is shaved so the probe makes clean contact with the skin. It grows back.
Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved slowly across the area. Nothing is inserted and nothing hurts.
The doctor watches the organs move on screen and measures fluid, masses and wall thickness in real time.
A focused emergency scan often takes ten to fifteen minutes and changes the plan immediately.
These are the situations where our doctors reach for the probe first.
Hit by a car, a fall, or any blunt trauma to the abdomen
A swollen, hard or painful belly
Sudden weakness with pale gums, which can mean internal bleeding
A male cat or dog straining to urinate
An unspayed female who is drinking heavily, lethargic, or has discharge
Repeated vomiting where a blockage is suspected
Difficulty breathing that may be fluid around the heart or lungs
A pregnancy that is not progressing normally
Most pets lie on a padded table or in a technician’s arms and need nothing more than a gentle hold. A small patch of fur is clipped, warm gel is applied, and the probe is moved over the area. There is no needle, no radiation, and no anesthesia for the great majority of patients. A focused emergency scan usually takes ten to fifteen minutes, and the doctor talks you through what they are seeing.
Sound waves only. Most pets stay awake and comfortable the whole time.
A focused scan can confirm internal bleeding or a blockage on the spot.
The images are interpreted by the doctor treating your pet, not mailed out.
