THE SHORT ANSWER

Why your pet may need to stay

Some patients cannot be stabilized in an hour. If your pet needs intravenous fluids, oxygen, injectable pain control, repeated blood work, or simply someone watching them all night, staying with us is safer than going home. There is a doctor and a nursing team in the building the entire time, not on call from somewhere else.

What hospitalization looks like here

Hospitalization is not a kennel with the light left on. It is a treatment area where your pet is on a monitor, on fluids, and within arm’s reach of a nurse who checks on them on a schedule the doctor sets. Vitals are recorded through the night, and the plan changes as the numbers change.

01

Admission and plan

The doctor explains why your pet needs to stay, what the night will involve, and what it will cost.

02

Continuous monitoring

Heart rate, breathing, temperature, blood pressure and oxygen are checked on a set schedule.

03

Treatment through the night

IV fluids, medications, pain control, oxygen and repeat blood work, adjusted as your pet responds.

04

Updates and discharge

You can call for an update at any hour. At discharge we go through home care in writing.

When a pet needs to stay overnight

These are the situations where going home is the riskier option.

Dehydration or vomiting that needs intravenous fluids

Breathing that needs supplemental oxygen

Pain that needs injectable medication, not pills

Recovery after emergency surgery

Toxin ingestion that needs monitoring for hours or days

Diabetes, kidney or heart disease that has become unstable

Blood work that needs to be repeated through the night

Anything where the doctor wants eyes on your pet continuously

What to expect

Before your pet is admitted, the doctor explains the plan and gives you a written estimate for the stay. You can say goodbye in the treatment area. Through the night a nurse records vitals on a schedule and the doctor adjusts treatment as things change. You can call at any hour for an update, and we call you if anything meaningful changes. At discharge you get written instructions and a direct number to reach us.

Monitored all night

Vitals recorded on a schedule the doctor sets, not just a glance in passing.

Staffed, not just open

A doctor and a nursing team are in the building every hour of the stay.

Call at any hour

There is no visiting-hours rule on updates. Call at three in the morning if you need to.
